Getting to Coral Island

By ferry or speedboat

Koh Larn, better known as Coral Island, is about eight kilometers from Pattaya. You can get there by either speed boat or ferry. Boats take both tourists and locals to and from the mainland.

Speedboat

The first way to get to the island is by speedboat. It’s a fun ride, although it can get bumpy and uncomfortable in bad weather. Boats have safety equipment on board. Make sure you know at what time the boat returns to Pattaya.

Advantages
Taking a speed boat to Coral Island has several advantages.

  • It is the quickest way to get there. A speedboat takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • A speedboat can get you to any place on Coral Island you want as opposed to the ferry, where you have a choice of only two piers. This way you can get to beaches like Samae beach and Tien beach that have few visitors.
  • If you take a speedboat right from Beach Road, you will save the time and expense of going to Bali Hai pier.

Cost
If you have a group of people you can charter a private speedboat. You can find them either on Beach Road or at Bali Hai pier. Price of the boat varies between 1,500 and 3,500 Baht each way dependent on the size on the boat and season. Make sure you agree on where to go and the duration of the trip with the boat driver before getting in.

Alternatively go to Bali Hai pier and find a joined speedboat at 300 to 400 Baht each way per person.

Where to find one
You can find speedboats on Beach Road and at Bali Hai pier, just South of Walking Street.

Ferry

The second way to get to Coral Island is by ferry. There are two ports on the island. The first is Na Baan, which is the main village on the island. The second is Tawaen Beach, the most popular beach on Coral Island.

Advantages
The ferry offers several advantages.

  • The main advantage of the ferry is its price. One way tickets are only 30 Baht per person, making the ferry a lot cheaper than a speedboat.
  • The ride is less bumpy, especially in bad weather.

Disadvantages
There are several disadvantages to the ferry.

  • The ferry is a little slower than a speedboat. The trip takes about 40 to 45 minutes.
  • You have a choice of only two piers on Coral Island, either Tawaen Beach or Na Baan village on the East coast. Since there is no beach at Na Baan you will have to take a motorbike taxi or a songthaew to get to one of the beaches.

Cost
Tickets are 30 Baht each way. The price is the same for both ports. You can arrive on Koh Larn in one port and go back from the other.

Tickets can be bought at the kiosk right next to the boats just before departure.

Pier in Pattaya
Ferries depart from Bali Hai pier in Pattaya, just South of Walking Street. Walk to the end of the pier. Boats to Tawaen Beach are on the left, to Na Baan on the right.

Get to Bali Hai pier by taxi or chartered songthaew.
