Koh Samui’s second most popular beach

Lamai beach is Koh Samui’s second most popular beach after Chaweng. Located on the East coast of Koh Samui island, Lamai is a little quieter and more laid back than Chaweng beach about 12 kilometers further North.

When you’re looking for a thrill in Lamai, try the zipline at Lamai Viewpoint. A few kilometers from Lamai is one of the island’s most famous attractions, the mummified monk of Koh Samui.

To do & see in Lamai

Apart from the beaches there is plenty to do and see around Lamai. In the small town you will find restaurants, markets, shops, Thai massage and nightlife.

Lamai Viewpoint & Zipline

A 10 minute climb through the tropical rain forest leads to Lamai viewpoint. From there you will have great panoramic views of the sea, Lamai and the forested interior of Koh Samui island.

On the way to the top are a small waterfall and the Valentine Stone which looks a bit like a heart from a certain angle. Thrill seekers can try an exciting 80 meter high zipline ride over the tropical rain forest.

Lamai Sunday Night Market

If you enjoy Thai food, snacks and sweets, head over to the Lamai Sunday Night Market. At the countless stalls you can try a large variety of Thai food such as curries, noodles, pad thai and fresh fish. Make sure to try some of the many sweets and snacks like spring rolls, pastries or even fried insects.

If you like sweet try a roti, a Thai pancake topped with sugar and condensed milk and a choice of banana, chocolate or fruit.

Street entertainers and live music give the large street market extra ambiance. Try to haggle and get a bargain when shopping for clothing or souvenirs such as Thai handicrafts.

Lamai Sunday Night Market is held every Sunday starting around 5 pm on Had Lamai road and adjoining streets.

Mummified Monk at Wat Khunaram

A few kilometers away from Lamai beach along Route 4169 to Nathon is Wat Khunaram, a Buddhist temple famous for its display of a mummified monk in a glass casket.

The monk Loung Pordaeng who was famous for his meditation skills died in 1973 while meditating. Loung Pordaeng, who foresaw his own death, wanted his body to be kept in a glass casket in Wat Khunaram temple to serve as an inspiration to others to follow the teachings of the Buddha.

Buffy Game Park

Small children will enjoy themselves at Buffy Game Park, a small amusement park with six rides like the Twin Dragon swinging boat, a small Ferris wheel, bumper cars and the kids train. After dark the place is beautifully lit up in several colors.

Buffy Game Park is located in the town of Lamai on route 4169 near the beach. Rates are 300 Baht for 2 hours of unlimited rides.

Long sandy beach

With its long beach with fine white sand, beach-side restaurants and bars and its usually calm and clear waters, Lamai beach is a great place to relax in the sun and do some swimming. Besides that there is kayaking, surf boarding, banana boat or you can lift off from the waters into the air on a water jet pack.

Coco Splash Adventure & Water Park

Another fun place for children is Coco Splash Adventure & Water Park, a water and amusement park with seven water slides and four pools. Kids will also have a good time with the bouncy castle, bumper boats, bungee trampolines, pedal Go-Kart and mini golf. For adults, there is the jacuzzi to relax in.

The park is located off the Samui ring road in Lamai. Opening hours are daily from 10.30 am until 5.30 pm.

Muay Thai Boxing

Muay Thai or Thai boxing is Thailand’s national sport. It is a fun experience to watch the boxers perform rituals before the start of the fight and to experience the laden, eclectic atmosphere of the fights, accompanied by loud traditional music.

Unique to Lamai stadium is that besides teenagers and adult male fighters, you can also watch ladies fights.

The boxing stadium is located near the Lamai night market on Had Lamai road. Fights are held every Saturday starting at 9 pm.
