History of the ship

The Sirimahannop, which means “Auspiciousness of the vast ocean”, is a replica of the Thoon Kramom, a three-mast sailing ship built in 1864 in Bangkok. The cargo ship belonging to the East Asiatic Company carried teak wood and other cargo to Europe, bringing prosperity to Siam. The ship used to dock at Siam’s largest international trading port where currently Asiatique the Riverfront is.

During the Franco-Siamese war of 1893 the ship was converted into a warship to defend Bangkok against possible invasion.

Museum

In the hull of the ship is a small museum. Old photos of the Thoon Kramom and the old port detail the ship’s history and the international trade between Siam and European countries as well as gives an impression of Siam during the late 19th century and early 20th century. An interactive gallery tells the story of the ship.
