Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the cruise is a chance to see some of Bangkok’s most iconic sites in a relaxed and romantic setting. Sailing up the Chao Phraya river, diners have great views of both river banks. Picturesque sites like the Grand Palace and Wat Arun, both beautifully illuminated at night, come into sight.

The Horizon dinner cruise is operated by the five star Shangri-La hotel. Both service and buffet are of excellent quality.

In a relaxed and romantic ambiance, diners can sample dishes from the nicely presented buffet. The drinks list contains a good selection of beers, wines, spirits and other drinks. The beautifully decorated Horizon cruise boat has an outside upper deck and an indoor air conditioned lower deck.

Relaxing ambiance

With its two decks, the Horizon boat is smaller than most dinner cruise ships and carries fewer passengers. The inside deck below is air conditioned, while the open air upper deck provides the best views and a chance to enjoy the cool river breeze. Aboard the slow moving ship the ambiance is peaceful and relaxed with soft background music.

Landmarks along the river

During the two hour Horizon cruise diners will see some of Bangkok’s historic landmarks and modern skyscrapers as well as local life on the river banks.

A few of the sights on the river banks are Wichai Prasit Fort, the River City shopping complex, the colonial style Yodpiman River Walk, the Royal Barges Museum and the modern Rama VIII bridge.

The boat will float by two traditional style Chinese temples on the banks of the river, the Guan Yin shrine and the Kuan An Keng shrine.

Highlights are the Grand Palace and the Wat Arun with its 82 meter tall Khmer style pagoda that was built 250 years ago.

Buffet dinner

Before dinner the waiter will bring the drinks list which contains a good selection of cocktails, wines, spirits, beers and other drinks.

The well presented buffet with a good choice of Thai, Western, Asian and seafood offers both vegetarian and non vegetarian options. After the main course there is a wide selection of delicious desserts. There is no need to hurry to the buffet, as the food is replenished regularly.

Thai and international dishes

The buffet offers a wide variety of Thai, Japanese and international dishes.

Salads
Choice of salads include spicy grilled beef salad, green papaya salad with grilled pork, steamed vegetable dumpling, spicy minced pork salad and Greek salad.

Main course
On the main course are dishes as steamed Jasmin rice, fried rice with vegetables, stir fried beef oyster sauce with broccoli, chicken green curry with eggplant and basil in coconut soup, Panaeng vegetable and tofu, grilled vegetables with herbs, potato au gratin, sushi, sashimi, massaman curry and pork ribs.

Seafood
Fresh seafood choices include roasted sea bass, stir fried squid with spring onion and salted egg, tiger prawns, mussels and scallops.

Desserts
For dessert there is a good choice of local fresh fruits as mango, pineapple, watermelon, grapes and guava. Be sure to try some of the Thai and international desserts like green tea opera cake, apple crumble cheese cake, chocolate tart, Gianduja mousse as well as bread and cheese.

Departure pier & time

The Horizon cruise departs from the NEXT2 pier at the Shangri-La hotel. The boat departs at 7:30 pm. Please arrive at the pier at least 20 minutes before departure.

Getting to the pier

The hotel is located at 89 Soi Wat Suan Plu in Bang Rak district. You can get there by Sky Train, River Express Boat, taxi or tuk tuk.

Sky Train
The nearest BTS Sky Train station is Saphan Taksin, a few minutes walk from the hotel.

River Express Boat
You can take a River Express Boat to the Sathorn boat pier. From there, it is a very short walk to the Shangri-La Hotel. You can take a boat of the orange, yellow or green line. Make sure to check the boat time table, some of the express boat lines stop service early.

Taxi or tuk tuk
Alternatively, take a metered taxi or if you’re not far from the Shangri-La Hotel, take a tuk tuk.
