One of two airports in Bangkok the other being Don Muang, Suvarnabhumi is Thailand’s biggest airport. While Don Muang is mainly a base for domestic and regional low cost airlines, Suvarnabhumi handles most international flights from all over the world. Opened in 2006, the airport handles some 65 million passengers per year from both domestic and international flights.

Suvarnabhumi is located about 30 kilometers from downtown Bangkok. The airport is well connected to the city by Airport Rail Link, taxis and buses.

Arrivals

Domestic and international arrivals are located on the second floor. In the hall you will find facilities as banks, currency exchange, ATM’s and telecom shops.

Meeting point
If you have arranged to be picked up privately, pick up is usually from the meeting point at gate 3 in the arrivals hall.

SIM Card
Tourists can buy a Thai SIM card in the arrivals hall. The Happy Tourist Data Sim card offers eight days unlimited 4G Internet at 299 Baht. The card is available at the DTAC and AIS stores in the arrivals hall.

Departures

The check in counters for both domestic and international departures are on the fourth floor.

Food & drink

The airport offers a wide variety in restaurants, both Thai and international as well as two food courts.

Restaurants
Across the airport are dozens of restaurants, coffee shops, juice bars and ice cream shops.

For Western food go to McDonald’s, Burger King or the Pizza Company. If you prefer Asian food, there is a wide choice of Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean and Thai eateries.

Most restaurants are located on the third floor.

Magic Food Point
The Magic Food Point food court is located at the end of the hall on level 1. Dozens of stalls sell typical Thai food as noodle soup, Pad Thai, pork leg stew and roast duck at low prices. Halal food is available.

The food court opens 24 hours per day. Change cash for coupons first, cash is not accepted.

FOODSTOP
You will find the FOODSTOP food court in the domestic departures hall. Here you will find among others coffee shops, McDonald’s, Burger King, noodle shops, Subway and Fuji.

Location

Suvarnabhumi airport is located about 30 kilometers East of downtown Bangkok in Samut Prakan province. It is just off Motorway 7 from Bangkok to Chonburi and Pattaya.

How to get to and from Suvarnabhumi airport

The airport can easily be reached by public transport.

From / to Bangkok city

From downtown Bangkok you can get to the airport by Airport Rail Link, taxi, bus or private transfer.

Airport Rail Link
Cheap, quick and easy to use, the ARL Airport Rail Link is a very convenient way to get to downtown Bangkok while avoiding the traffic jams.

Most travelers take the train to Phaya Thai station (A8). Here you can get on the BTS Sky Train. Alternatively, get off at Makkasan station (A6), where you can get on the MRT Subway.

The Airport Rail Link station is located at floor B (Basement level) of the terminal building. Tickets can be bought at the ticketing machines that accept coins and bank notes. One way fare to Makkasan station is 35 Baht, to Phaya Thai station 45 Baht.

The train runs from 6 am until midnight. A train departs from Suvarnabhumi airport 4 to 6 times per hour depending on the time of day.

Taxi
Taxis are available at level 1 (Ground level). Exit the terminal building at gate 4 and walk to the taxi stand. Tell the booth clerk where you want to go. The clerk will show you to your taxi.

The taxi meter starts at 35 Baht. You also have to pay a 50 Baht airport charge plus highway tolls, payable to the driver.

Taxis are available 24 hours per day. Especially during rush hour there can be heavy traffic.

Bus
To take a public bus into town, first get to the public transportation center next to the airport. Take the free express shuttle bus from the passenger terminal to the bus terminal at the public transportation center. The transport center opens 24 hours a day. From here you can take a public bus to Bangkok city. Among the destinations are:

  • Victory Monument (bus 551)
  • Don Muang airport (bus 554)
  • Southern bus terminal (bus 556)

One way fares are 25 to 45 Baht depending on the distance.

From / to Don Muang airport

If you arrive at Suvarnabhumi airport and have a connecting flight from Don Muang airport, you can take a taxi or use the free shuttle bus.

Free shuttle bus
To use the free shuttle from Suvarnabhumi to Don Muang airport, you need a ticket for a flight departing from Don Muang.

Exit the arrivals hall (level 2) through gate 3. Walk to the shuttle bus booth on the right. Show your flight ticket either printed or on your phone to the clerk at the booth and get on the bus to Don Muang.

The shuttle bus runs two to four times per hour depending on the time of day. The trip takes between one and two hours depending on traffic.
