Silom Thai Cooking School

If you love Thai food and are looking for a break from sightseeing, take a cooking class at Silom Thai cooking school. Learn how to prepare authentic Thai cuisine from professional instructors in a relaxed and fun environment. In small classes of no more than ten people you will learn how to cook famous Thai dishes as green curry and Tom Yum Goong from scratch.

Trip to a local market

Before the course starts (morning class only) you will go to a local wet market abundant with smells and colors and a wide choice of vegetables, herbs, spices, chilies, fruits, fish and meat. The instructor will explain about the spices, herbs and vegetables used in traditional Thai cooking and how to choose the best fresh produce.

The cooking school

When the ingredients have been bought, it is off to the cooking school. The Silom Thai cooking school is decorated with cooking utensils and various equipment used in the traditional Thai kitchen.

Set in a relaxed setting each student gets their own cooking station where you can pan-fry, stir-fry and wok several dishes to your own liking, spicy or not spicy.

Prepare curry paste

An important part of cooking Thai food is to prepare curry paste, the basis for many Thai dishes. Herbs and spices are put together in a stone mortar and ground together with a pestle in the traditional way.

Classes

Students have a choice of a morning, afternoon or evening class. The morning class is preceded by a short trip to a local market.

What you will do & learn

Activities for each class are:

  • Tour a local wet market to buy ingredients, learn about spices, herbs and other ingredients in Thai cooking, learn how to select good quality fresh ingredients (morning class only)
  • Learn about traditional food preparation techniques in the Thai kitchen
  • Prepare curry paste
  • Cook rice and sticky rice
  • Prepare coconut milk
  • Prepare several classic Thai dishes
  • Eat the food you have cooked

Classes and menus may differ and may be subject to change.

Thai dishes to prepare

In each class you will learn to prepare five dishes out of the list below, three of which you will cook from scratch.

  • Tom Yum Goong, spicy sour shrimp soup
  • Laab Gai, minced chicken salad
  • Pad Thai, fried noodles
  • Nam Prik Gaeng Kheow Wan, green curry paste
  • Gaeng Kheow Wan Gai, green curry with chicken
  • Som Tam, green papaya salad
  • Nam Prik Gaeng Massaman, massaman curry paste
  • Massaman Gai, massaman curry with chicken and potatoes
  • Phanaeng Neua, phanaeng curry with beef
  • Khao Niao Mamuang, sweet sticky rice with mango

Vegetarian dishes are also available.

You will get to eat all the dishes you have prepared.

Class times

Silom Thai cooking school offers three daily classes.

  • Morning class from 9 am until 12:20 pm
  • Afternoon class from 1:40 pm until 5 pm
  • Evening class from 6 pm until 9 pm

The morning class is preceded by a visit to a local wet market to buy ingredients.

All ingredients, utensils, an apron and other necessities for the class will be provided by Silom Thai cooking school.

Silom Thai cooking school is located at 6/14 Deco road, just off Silom road, in the Silom area.

How to get there

The nearest BTS Sky Train station is Chong Nonsi, about 10 minutes away on foot.
Otherwise take a metered taxi.
