Getting to Bagan

How to get to Bagan from Bangkok, Yangon & Mandalay

Bagan is located in the plains of central Burma (or Myanmar with its new name) on the Eastern bank of the Irrawaddy river 180 kilometers South West of Mandalay and about 600 kilometers North West of Yangon.

Bagan can be reached by air, train, boat, bus and car.

Air
By far the easiest, most comfortable and quickest way to get to Bagan is by airplane. Nyaung U airport is just a few kilometers away from Old Bagan.

Bagan is serviced by a number of airlines including Air Mandalay, Air Bagan and Asian Wings. Most international visitors enter Burma in Yangon through air from Bangkok. There are multiple flights daily from Yangon to Nyaung U airport.

Train
There is a direct railway connection between Yangon and Bagan. The train departs from Yangon at 4 pm, the journey takes at least 16 hours. A sleeper ticket will cost around US$ 50.

Bus
A direct bus from Yangon to Bagan will take around 15 hours and cost some 18,000 Kyat. There are several daily buses from Mandalay to Bagan, which takes around 7 hours and costs between 5,000 and 8,000 Kyat.

River boat
There are several boat services from Mandalay to Bagan over the Irrawaddy river. The fast service costs around US$ 40 and takes around 8 hours, the slow boat costs around US$ 10 and takes around 14 hours. Depending on local conditions like the water level of the river, the trip can take longer than planned.

The boat trip is a great way to see daily Burmese life as well as a relaxing experience with great views of the river and surrounding area.
