Wat Sa Si

Name
Wat Sa Si
Date
Late 14th century
Location

The Wat Sa Si temple is located a few hundred meters North West of the Wat Mahathat in the central zone inside the old walled town. Its location on a small island in the middle of the lotus flowers filled Tra Phang Tra Kuan pond makes it one of the most attractive monuments of the Sukhothai Historical Park.

According to the texts on one of the stone inscriptions discovered in Sukhothai, the Wat Sa Si was founded towards the end of the 14th century. The small temple consists of a principal chedi, another smaller chedi, a viharn, an ubosot and a Sukhothai style walking Buddha image.

Singhalese style chedi

The main chedi, a well preserved bell shaped chedi in Singhalese style is set on a square base.

According to a stone inscription the chedi was built to enshrine the ashes of King Li Thai of Sukhothai. Behind the principal chedi were several smaller chedis, of which nothing but the base remains today.

Other structures

Assembly hall
In front of the main chedi is the viharn or assembly hall, of which the base and rows of pillars remain. Seated on a pedestal to the back of the viharn is a large stuccoed stone image of the Buddha in the Bhumisparsha mudra, also known as “calling the Earth to witness” or “subduing Mara”.

Small chedi
To the left of the main chedi is a smaller chedi set on a square base. The circular chedi has four large niches where images of the Buddha were enshrined. In front of it stands a graceful image of a walking Buddha on a circular pedestal. The image in Sukhothai style is in the Vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching and discussion.

Ordination hall
The ubosot or ordination hall is a little away from the viharn on its own small island to the East. Its base and pillars remain surrounded by sema stones that mark the secret area. A bridge connects the island with the main area.
